A NEW VISION OF QUEBEC CITY Four Volumes to Explore the City and the Surrounding Region The first volume in this series takes you into the heart of the Old City, exploring many of the most important sites, institutions and monuments of the upper town, including the Ursuline Convent, founded in 1639, the Old Seminary, established in 1663, the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity - the first Anglican Cathedral built outside the British Isles - and Quebec's castle on a cliff, the internationally renowned Chateau Frontenac Hotel. The second volume focuses on the port and the crucial importance of the St. Lawrence River for Quebec City throughout its history. You will discover the site where Samuel de Champlain built his first habitation in 1608, and Place Royale, where French merchants constructed fine residences in the 17th and 18th centuries. Explore waterfront docks, warehouses, banks and factories, as our itinerary takes you along the base of the cliff to Saint-Pierre Street and the Saint-Roch quarter. Volume three explores the extensive fortification system of the only remaining walled city north of Mexico. Quebec was besieged many times, as French, British and American forces fought to control this strategic location. Our itinerary will also lead you into quiet residential streets to discover Quebec's domestic architecture, before ending with a visit to the historic Hôtel-Dieu hospital and convent, founded in 1639. In the final volume, we venture beyond the fortification walls to see Parliament Hill, the National Battlefields Park, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste quarter and elegant 19th-century villas with their fine gardens. Our exploration of the countryside includes the magnificent Montmorency Falls and features rural architecture along the old Royal Road on the Beaupré Shore, as well as on the picturesque Island of Orleans where many ancestral farms have been home to the same families since the 1600s.
